Catch-up Maths classes are now in their second year and have expanded from one session on Mondays to a second one on Wednesday afternoons (3.30pm to 4.30pm, during term time).
The classes are open to children in Year 5 and Year 6 but we also support those who have transferred to secondary school (Year 7) during their first year of transition. Most children are from St Catherine’s, Whiting’s Hill and Underhill, although we do support a couple of local pupils from Fould’s and Ashmole.
Children are able to revise the basics of each Maths topic and then build on that knowledge at their own pace. They get the opportunity to learn from each other and ask questions they may not feel comfortable asking in class at school.
In addition, there is the opportunity for the children to identify and request certain topics which they are less capable at or confident in. This gives them the responsibility for their own learning and makes them feel more empowered.
Lessons are a combination of teaching skills followed by the opportunity to apply what they have learnt in a practical way. The children look forward to the classes and feel comfortable asking and answering questions in a learning environment that has helped to build their confidence in their own abilities.
